A 50-Year Strategy Designed Into Environments & Experiences

A California real estate company had successfully developed their massive “master plan” over the past 50 years. They came to IDEO to devise a strategy for the next 50.

Halfway through the project we needed to communicate some rather critical research findings, so our team pulled the client out of the comforts of a conference room and into the environments they built and managed. Using raw audio from the field and studio-recorded voiceover, I produced a 12-stop audio walking tour — each “episode” conveying a key insight.

Several weeks later, we designed a 3,000+ square foot built environment for our final deliverable. Imagine if an exhaustive final presentation deck morphed into an immersive museum. The journey through that space detailed a strategic shift that could guide the next 50 years of their transition from physical builders to platform managers. We used design fiction, audio storytelling, and projection mapping software to allow clients to step into their future.
